SPEAKER: Dave DiProspero
TITLE: Associate/Director –
Pharmaceutical Process Technology
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 25
INTERPHEX: What are you known
for professionally? What is your
area of expertise?
DiProspero: I have been involved in
Process Engineering and Facility Design
of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Facilities for nearly all of my career.
My primary area of expertise is Oral
Solid Dose (OSD) Form, which refers
to tablets and capsules. As a subject
matter expert in this area for my
employer CRB, I work with a wide range
of clients to assist with the engineering
and design of their OSD Manufacturing
Systems and the integration of such
into their facility. This includes issues
associated with process and equipment
selection, system integration, material
handling and containment, regulatory
issues and considerations, as well as
operational efficiencies and safety.
INTERPHEX: What are you most passionate about professionally? What
most excites you about your work
and the contribution(s) you make?
DiProspero: Working in the
pharmaceutical industry and being
involved in the drug development
and drug supply process is very
rewarding. The projects I get involved
in and the work being done at CRB is
directly impacting the quality of life,
by providing the safe and reliable
medications so many people rely on.
It is very exciting to see the dedication
of so many professionals involved in
getting a new facility designed, built
and up and running, with the primary
goal of saving and extending lives, via
the products produced.
INTERPHEX: Where can we find you
when you’re not working? What’s
your favorite way to spend some
well-deserved time off?
DiProspero: Music has always been
a huge part of my life and is a great
stress reliever for me. When I’m not
working in my full-time position you
can find me out playing Rock & Roll
with my band Right Turn at 40. We’ve
been a successful working cover band
playing the Philadelphia and South
Jersey area since 2006.
INTERPHEX: Any volunteer
activities you enjoy? Why?
DiProspero: I’ve been a long time
member and active participant in
ISPE and have enjoyed my numerous
volunteer roles in this organization.
I have been chair and co-chair of
several committees, most recently
Facility of the Year Awards and engage
in speaking roles quite frequently.
Through this involvement I have been
able to meet and get to know a wide
range of professionals across the
globe. With these connections I have
developed a great network of “who
to call” and have found a constant
willingness for sharing of knowledge.
INTERPHEX: Has there been any
significant advancement within your
area of expertise?
DiProspero: To some degree, the
actual process of manufacturing
an OSD Pharmaceutical Product
has remained relatively unchanged
since the first potassium carbonate
tables were compressed in 1843. The
process has generally remained a
BATCH operation that includes: Weigh
Dispense, Blending, Granulation,
Drying, Compression, Coating, and
Packaging. Although there have
been some great advancements in
Process Equipment Design, Process
Integration, Analytical Technologies
and material handling, there have not
been many silver bullets. However,
Continuous Manufacturing is
becoming a game changer and is now
one of the significant advancements
being implemented in the industry.
It brings some significant benefits
to the manufacturers and is strongly
endorsed by the FDA.
