INTERPHEX Booth No. 3103
INTERPHEX created a quick questionnaire to learn more
about OPTIMA Pharma GmbH and their technology. In this
exhibitor spotlight, Matthias Poslovski, Technical Sales
Director, answers our questions.
INTERPHEX: How has your company evolved into what it
is today?
Matthias Poslovski (OPTIMA Pharma GmbH):
OPTIMA
was founded by Otto Bühler in 1922. Initially, the company
manufactured filling scales for foodstuffs and other prod-
ucts. Packaging machines were added starting in 1950. In
the 1960s, the company developed machines for high preci-
sion dosing to meet the challenges posed by powder prod-
ucts. This led to our first projects for the pharmaceutical in-
dustry in the following years. Hans Bühler, part of the third
generation at work in the family-owned company, founded
the first international branch in the United States in 1984.
This is still the company's most important market today.
Bühler solidified the permanent expansion into the phar-
maceutical market with the acquisition of a pharmaceutical
liquid specialist in 1992. The growth made the implementa-
tion of a forward-looking strategy possible: developing into
a turnkey supplier. In addition to filling and sealing, these
projects today also include pharmaceutical freeze-drying
systems and isolators which OPTIMA manufactures itself.
OPTIMA Pharma is a company in the OPTIMA Packaging
Group. The OPTIMA group employs more than 2,000 people
worldwide.
INTERPHEX: Can you describe three aspects that have
allowed your company to succeed?
Poslovski:
OPTIMA Pharma made a name for itself early on
in the pharmaceutical industry with its custom solutions.
This high level of customer orientation is apparent today
both in the company's custom solutions and in its ability
to adapt modular standard machines. OPTIMA Pharma at-
taches great importance to the partnership component in
projects because doing so ensures the best results. OPTIMA
Pharma adopted new technologies that promised a high
level of customer benefit early on. A current example of
this is the simulation and visualization of flow patterns and
of multiphysical effects. The engineering process follows a
very goal-oriented path. OPTIMA Pharma also recognized
the turnkey requirement of the pharmaceutical industry
at a very early stage and implemented the processes for
filling and sealing (including upstream and downstream),
freeze-drying, and isolator technology for customers
through just one contact person.
INTERPHEX: What distinguishes your company from
others in the industry?
Poslovski:
Although OPTIMA Pharma has grown strongly in
the last few years, the company remains flexible. Customer
requirements often change, especially for projects with
run times upwards of 12 months. Customized, technical-
ly-advanced solutions that meet the highest levels of safety
requirements without any modification are in demand. The
partnership quality is apparent in this process.
As previously mentioned, OPTIMA Pharma comprehen-
sively covers the areas of filling and sealing, freeze-dry-
ingm, and isolator technology as a turnkey provider. This
means the customer has one contact person who holds
central responsibility. Additionally, the technical interfaces
between the system components are perfectly coordinated
in advance.
INTERPHEX: Where do you see the industry going in the
next 10 years?
Poslovski:
Requirements are varied, and change constantly.
Biopharmaceutical drugs require new ways of thinking about
how these drugs can be processed safely and reach the pa-
tients in a cost-effective manner. New forms of self-medica-
tion and new dosage forms are another aspect. Personalized
medicine is also very likely to make new technical solution
approaches necessary. We are already working on these
scenarios and we will continue to do so over the next ten
years and beyond. OPTIMA Pharma is also very well posi-
tioned and prepared for the challenges with respect to the
versatility of technology.
INTERPHEX: What are you looking forward to at
INTERPHEX this year?
Poslovski:
We are looking forward to a successful trade
show. INTERPHEX is the industry meeting point where a
vast number of decision makers learn about current devel-
opments. This is why INTERPHEX has always been an eco-
nomic barometer for OPTIMA Pharma. The IPS tour is sure
to provide some exciting encounters once again. n
