Christoph Haas (HaasPharm Tech Consulting, LLC): I started
as technical project coordinator at CIBA-Geigy in Basel,
Switzerland. I went to the University of Basel, School of
Pharmacy and got my PhD in pharmaceutical technology in
Haas: My area of expertise is pharmaceutical technology for solids, liquids, oint-
ments, creams, aseptic and terminal sterilized dosage forms, and dry powder inhaler.
Haas: Growing within CIBA-Geigy, getting the right opportunities at the right
INTERPHEX: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the industry?
time to participate on projects, expand my knowledge, and exposure to pharma
technology at AAIPharma, Roche, Schering Plough, and Forest Labs. Having the
opportunity to serve the companies as head of Technical Services as well as in
various line management functions. Having the opportunity also to work around
the world for the various companies in Europe, Singapore, and Indonesia, which
gave me a broad experience.

INTERPHEX: What advice would you give to a professional starting out in the industry?
Haas: Get exposed to as many aspects of the business as possible early on. Keep
an open mind and a broad interest in all the aspects of the pharmaceutical industry.
INTERPHEX: How do you feel the industry changed or evolved in recent years?
Haas: Science and technology are the drivers for the development and manufac-
turing of robust, high-quality pharmaceutical products.
INTERPHEX: Has there been any significant advancement within your area of expertise?
Haas: The computerization of equipment like compression machines, film coaters,
packaging equipment, etc. has helped to enhance the reliability and controls of
processes and its reproducibility.
INTERPHEX: Where do you see the industry going in the next 10 years? Your area of
Haas: Continue to develop more integrated, computer-controlled processes with
less human interface. The electronic batch record is still in its infancy.
INTERPHEX: What would you consider to be a major achievement for the industry
in the near future?
Haas: Be compliant without the fear of FDA 483s and warning letters, consent
decrees. I can't believe that 2016 companies still release material with failing data
and try to either hide it or explain it away. n
