The 2018 ‘Pharma Phorecast’
As we craft Pharmaceutical Processing’s opening column for 2018, it’s not hard to identify the major challenges facing the industry this year. However, it is hard trying to narrow them down. But here goes our list of issues to keep a close eye on—in no particular order—over the next 11 or 12
• Drug Price Pain: While not offering solutions,
there’s great government pressure to lower
prices, leading to even greater pressure on drug
companies to lower their costs. Stay tuned for
more possible staff cutbacks and industry mergers.
• Cannabis Conundrum: Medical or otherwise,
puzzlement over legality persists among marijuana

elsewhere? Despite many assurances that all is
progressing smoothly, there’s bound to be some
fallout among those who have dawdled. Some
surprising victims may turn up as the year
• Research Bypass: Pfizer’s
surprise announcement in January that it was
abandoning further Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
drug research could prompt others in the industry
to take another look at costly ongoing projects.
• Opioid Emergency: Efforts are underway to find
a magic non-opioid pain remedy, but can anything
else work? (See Cover Story, Page 10).
• Biosimilars Swell: The FDA, lagging way behind
Europe in approvals, has a lot of catching up to
do. This year might see a biosimilar boost in the
• Blockchain Growth: This technology goes well
beyond Bitcoin and is poised to take off. Like
the Cloud, the sky might be the limit. (See story,
• Data Dissection: Data is king. In fact with new
technology tying all data together for instant
analysis, it is becoming the royal flush. Say
goodbye to the common spreadsheet.
The ‘2018 Pharma Phorecast’ is complete, or is it?
Let us know whether you agree or disagree. Either
way, it is bound to be one that will have long-term
impact on the industry.
